Africa's ultimate plane safari

The airstrip at the Zimbabwean capital’s second airport is surprisingly busy for a country whose economy is in meltdown. The great African tree expert, 80-year-old Meg Coates Palgrave, is being helped out of a four-seater aircraft returning from the Zambezi valley. A weekly delivery of thousands of chicks is being offloaded for Charles Davy (father of Chelsy, Prince Harry’s old flame). Six private planes are parked outside the fuelling station. And coming down the runway is a smart white Cessna Caravan , followed by a six-seater Cessna 206, painted in distinctive giraffe print, out of which leaps a cheery Italian guide and a glamorous blonde wearing layers of African beads.

Luca and Antonella Belpietro can normally be found in their Kenyan camp, Campi Ya Kanzi, in the Chyulu Hills. But last year, at the request of repeat guests who enjoyed their company and their African expertise, they organised a five-week flying safari around East Africa. This year’s trip, their second, is covering southern Africa too, and they’re in Harare to pick me up for the last two weeks. Readmore>

Scenic Air Safaris News Update

The last six months of  2013 saw Scenic Air Safaris fully integrate its Northern Circuit - Wings over the Great Rift Valley –an 8 day guided trip. With several exclusive bookings on this trip in the last two months agents and guests are really starting to see the amazing value offered by this tour which offers not only the best accommodation available in Northern Kenya, but also access to this in a luxury aircraft while viewing the amazing landscapes as you have your Scenic flight between each location.

With locations in Laikipia at Loisaba, at Chui Lodge in the Rift Valley overlooking Lake Naivasha and also at Karen Blixen Camp in the Mara, guests were treated to exceptional scenic flying over areas not normally observed at such close quarters.

Sadly a fire in November at Loisaba Lodge brought this stunning lodge to its demise and we wish them a speedy recovery in their renovation process and look forward to having a new and improved Loisaba available to us hopefully towards the end of the year. Very fortunately we have been able to rearrange this Northern circuit by including  the outstanding Joy’s Camp in Shaba, in place of Loisaba. This 10 bedroomed luxury camp is an oasis in this hauntingly beautiful Northern Frontier District , together with a natural spring and waterhole frequented by big game. We have now changed the day of Departure of the SAS 880 to Saturdays ex Nairobi.

Our Southern circuit – the Out of Africa trip- continued to impress guests with stays at Karen Blixen, Mara -Satao Elerai, Amboseli - Severin Safari Camp in Tsavo West and Satao Camp in Tsavo East. En route low level flights regularly included magnificent views of millions of Flamingoes below on Lake Natron in the very heart of the Rift Valley, as we traversed from the Mara along the Tanzania border to Amboseli, its elephants and  the snow capped Massif of Kilimanjaro.

Guests who booked on our weekly trips were escorted by a professional guide on board throughout each trip as well as our experienced bush pilots.

Those doing the Out of Africa 8 day trip this last six months, were treated to fabulous interior room renovations in all tents at Satao Camp. once again raising the bar for superior bush stays.

Our private charters starting either from Wilson Airport in Nairobi or from our own base at Vipingo on the Kenya coast, took guests in stylish comfort not just around Kenya but to several far flung locations in East & Southern Africa. Charter flights included trips to Rwanda, to Mahale Mts in Western Tanzania  and down to the beautiful Qurimbas Island archipelago in Northern Mozambique. As word gets out on Scenic Air Safaris Luxury aircraft the charter business is growing significantly and again this season Scenic Air Safaris flew several very high profile clients.

With two Cessna Grand Caravans available, one based in Nairobi and one based in Mombasa, we are perfectly positioned to offer professional charter services at competitive rates to all corners of East and Central Southern Africa.

How we organize your luxury air safari

The internet is becoming ever more important for people to book their holidays. Travel sites make it easy to compare different options and read reviews of other travellers. Off-the-shelf holidays are widely available. The challenge for small tour operators, many of them operating in niche markets, is to set themselves apart from the big crowd.

Scenic Air Safaris knows the challenge when it comes to organize an individual tour. The options are so numerous that it is impossible to set them all online. Every guest has different expectations and wants a different program. Although our safaris are follow a fixed itinerary, the difficult part is to provide a program before and after the safaris. Some clients like to stay a few days at the beach while others prefer to stay in Nairobi or even continue to another country, for example to do Gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

When Scenic Air Safaris received a request from a potential client, our sales consultant will get back with a number of questions so that we can find out more about the wishes of the client and create a number of options. If a guest wants to stay only at 5-star hotels in Nairobi or likes to do water sports after a safari, we can narrow down the options and come up with three or four programmes.

But we consider those programmes as being easy to put together. When clients request a different safari than the ones we offer on a weekly departure, the effort and time we put in is much higher. Creating a very individual safari within a budget given by client can become an enormous challenge. Thanks to our partners (see we are able to get create bespoke itineraries that are second to none.

As traffic situation worsens, Scenic Air Safaris offers transfer flights from Mombasa Airport

Traffic situation in Mombasa has become a nightmare. Tourists arriving at Moi International Airport often spend hours in traffic if they have to be transferred to hotels situated at the south and north coast of Kenya. Many clients are therefore using companies such as Scenic Air Safaris to transfer them from the airport to an airstrip close to their hotels, thus beating the traffic. Especially tourists staying at the resorts of Malindi make use of the flights as it cuts the transfer time from almost 3 hours to about fourty-five minutes. VIP guests enjoy an even better service as Scenic Air Safaris will pick them up at the gate and assist them through immigration and baggage claim, a service which becomes more and more popular.

During a strike at the Likoni ferry last December, which connects Mombasa Island with the southern coast, Scenic Air Safaris has rearranged its flights to transfer guest from Diani to Moi airport to ensure they catch their return flight. As it turned out, the service was very well accepted by clients who otherwise would have been stuck at the ferry for hours.

Discover Africa like nobody before you on a luxury scenic air safari

Founded and operated by pilots, Kenyan tour operator Scenic Air Safaris offers very unique luxury safaris with their VIP Cessna Grand Caravan.

Founded in 2008 by pilots, Scenic Air Safaris wanted to create a unique product in Eastern Africa. Using some of the best camps in Kenya and connecting them with flights on a luxurious aircraft they have created a safari experience that is unmatched. Unlike other flying safaris the aircraft and the flights are an integrated part of the safari experience. “The aircraft is not used to get quickly from one location to another, but it is part of the entire journey. Flying in low altitude it is possible to spot animals from a different perspective while listening to the comment and explanations of the professional guide.”

Unlike many might expect, the aircraft is not fitted with a standard interior, but it was fitted with only eight very comfortable leather seats, air conditioning and headsets for each passenger. “This makes it very unique in Kenya and clearly sets us apart from the competition.” End of 2012, Scenic Air Safaris took delivery of their second Cessna Grand Caravan and extended their product range. It now features more destinations throughout Kenya and can offer customized luxury safaris to any destination in eastern Africa. The aircrafts are available for charter flights out of Mombasa and Nairobi so that guests can very comfortable connect from and to their international flights.

Scenic Air Safaris is also selling directly to its clients. From the early planning stage the sales consultants work very closely with the customer. Every aspect of the safari is carefully planned and customers are given different options from which they can choose. Once clients arrive in Kenya they are welcomed by their driver who takes them to the hotel or transfers them to the nearby local airport where they will be met by the pilot and the private guide who will ensure they experience a holiday of a lifetime.

5 important items to bring on safari

We all know when we go on holiday we tend to forget something at home that we would have needed. When you come out on safari, there are some items you should definitely not forget. Here are the 5 most important of them.

1.      Camera
It seems obvious to bring a camera. However a lot of animals can be in some distance from the car and taking pictures of them is very hard. You don’t need the latest high-tech SLR and 5 different lenses, but you should look out for a camera that can zoom in quite a bit. I have seen that some modern compact cameras have better zoom than entry-level SLR cameras. Also be aware that in some parks you´ll find a lot of dust. So make sure your camera is dustproof and can be cleaned easily.

2.      Binoculars

Without binoculars you will certainly miss some of the cool stuff in the bush. If you find some cats in the distance it will be hard to watch them. You will be surprised just how much value a good pair will add to your safari. Those who don’t have them will be very jealous.

3.      Sun blocker

Even if you don’t plan to stay at the beach, sun blocker is a must! In some parts of the country the sun seems to burn endlessly and getting sunburned on the first day out on safari will certainly reduce the quality of your holidays.

4.      Insect repellent
Especially in the areas closer to the coast you will find a lot of mosquitoes. And we all know how uncomfortable a bite is. Insect repellent will help you keep them away and get bitten less.

5.      British power plug adaptor
Kenya uses British power plugs so remember to bring an adapter. Although you can buy them in Kenya, your hotel might not be close to a supermarket and not all camps sell them.

With these five items in your luggage nothing can go wrong. Make a checklist before you pack your suitcase so you don’t forget them. It will be worth it!

Leading Luxury Safari Airline Launches

Upmarket clients who wish to enjoy luxury travel increasingly choose Kenya for their holidays. The country has seen a surge in overseas tourism over the past years and the number of exclusive properties and boutique hotels is steadily increasing. At the same time more and more clients research, choose and book their holiday online.

Leading luxury safari airline and tour operator Scenic Air Safaris has launched their new site to offer customers the possibility to book luxury air safaris online and get a personal service from their sales team.

“Since the emergence of the web customers increasingly book their holidays online. Companies have realized this trend and must make efforts to provide a high level of personal service to people who are located far away” says James Davies, Chief Pilot and Operations Director.

“With our new online presence we hope to engage our customers and give them the same attention and quality of service they would expect when walking into our office and talking directly to our sales consultants” he explains.

The sales team of Scenic Air Safaris offers this by working closely together with their customers to provide them with several options to make their safari holiday in Kenya a trip they will remember for a very long time. “When our clients contact us, we ask them for their preferences and put together an offer that is very individual and customized for that client. Every traveller has a different expectation of what they want to see and experience when travelling to Africa, and very often they have many questions that we are more than happy to answer” says Sales Manager Nawal Hussein.

Scenic Air Safaris, which currently owns two private luxurious aircraft wants to become the industry leader in customer service. The company founded in 2009 is the first tour operator in Kenya that offers luxury flying safaris and currently operates a number of different air safari tours. Both aircraft are also available for charter flights in Mombasa and Nairobi. It was set up after the owners decided to take their passion for flying and wildlife safaris and create a product that would allow travellers to experience the very same. Severin Air Safaris, has taken delivery of their latest addition to the fleet – a new Cessna Grand Caravan with the luxurious Oasis interior that will be based in Nairobi Wilson Airport.

The plane was newly built at Cessna in Wichita and is added to the existing fleet of another Grand Caravan and a Cessna 206 that was acquired early October. The journey of the new aircraft is truly remarkable. It departed from the Cessna factory heading to Florida before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to Spain. Severin Air Safaris Introduces New Luxury Scenic Air Safaris in Kenya

Severin Air Safaris, a Kenya based tour operator and airline that offers luxury flying safaris using two dedicated aircraft with VIP configuration, is pleased to announce the introduction of new flying packages departing weekly from Nairobi and Mombasa and bringing guests to the most amazing game parks and national reserves in Kenya.

Severin Air Safaris has been operating its luxury safari packages since 2010 covering the southern part of Kenya between Mombasa and the Masai Mara. By the end of 2012 they will introduce a northern circuit starting from Nairobi and bringing guests to Loisaba, Naivasha and Maasai Mara, with optional extensions including Shaba and Meru National Park.

The professionally guided main tour will depart weekly from Nairobi’s Wilson airport. On the program are 2 nights at Loisaba Lodge in the Loisaba conservancy, 2 nights at Chui Lodge and Kiaganzi House at Lake Naivasha and 3 nights in Karen Blixen Camp in the Masai Mara. The journey starts with the guests flying into Loisaba‘s private wildlife conservation area where they will be welcomed by their private silver level safari guide. Loisaba Wilderness is outstandingly beautiful, its abundant wildlife is truly wild and its accommodation is comfortable beyond measure. Guests can enjoy several of the many activities Loisaba has to offer including horse riding, camel riding, mountain biking, river rafting or fishing (seasonal) or game drives which are followed by an evening bush sundowner and a night game drive where they have a very good chance to see the elusive Leopard, a regular visitor to Loisaba’s waterhole. After 2 nights at Loisaba Lodge, the journey continues to Lake Naivasha. The accommodation consisting of both Chui Lodge and Kiangazi House is located in the private Oserian Wildlife Conservancy and for the next 2 days guests can enjoy activities such as a boat ride, daily game drives and a bush breakfast on the shore of the lake.

On the fifth day the journey continues to Karen Blixen Camp in the Masai Mara where the next three days are spent exploring the vast wildlife areas of the Mara Reserve and the Mara North Conservancy which is a beautiful private wilderness area of more than 30,000 hectares. The Masai Mara is famous for its unique concentration of wildlife, birds, rich vegetation and open savannah. It has been classified one of the "Seven Wonders of the World" due to the extraordinary annual migration (July - November) when over 1.3 million wildebeest and zebras cross from the Serengeti to the Maasai Mara in search of greener pastures. Less famous, yet very impressive, is the Loita Hills migration, where thousands of local wildebeest come to the Mara North Conservancy between December and May.

The northern circuit can be extended to Meru and Shaba, or be combined with the existing southern circuit. Guests choosing to combine both itineraries will spend another two nights in Satao Elerai Camp in Amboseli, one night in Severin Safari Camp in Tsavo West and two nights in Satao Camp in Tsavo East. Activities on the southern circuit include extensive games drives, bush walks, a visit to a traditional Masai Village in the Elerai Conservancy as well as sundowners at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.
