Karen Blixen Camp offers an authentic ‘yesteryear’ experience for visitors wishing to gain that little extra from their safari. One truly gets a feeling of the early 1920’s era when Masai Mara was seldom visited, and elaborate and comfortable camps were set up providing a luxurious and stylish retreat after each day’s adventure.
Karen Blixen Camp is an eco friendly luxury camp set on the banks of the Mara River. The location is spectacular; throughout the day elephants, giraffes, buffalos, zebras and impalas come for a drink, while crocodiles and a large resident hippo pod rest lazily in the river. Even lions and leopards occasionally come to this favored drinking spot.
The Camp comprises 22 luxurious en-suite tents; each set on a beautiful mahogany platform with a spacious veranda completed with cushion daybed from which one can enjoy an afternoon siesta, taking in the wonderful surroundings.
All 22 tents are placed along the river with a huge veranda at the front. Each tent has a private bathroom with WC, twin washbasins and an outdoor shower with view to the sky. The water is heated by gas and there is 24 hour electricity in all tents provided by solar panels. Our family unit consists of two tents with a shared veranda.
Camp facilities also include a restaurant, a bar, a lounge, a gift shop with wireless internet and a swimming pool. Our resident masseuse offers a wide range of wellness treatments.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the restaurant or bush garden from where one has an incredible close view of the Mara River and the wild animals coming to drink.
One can also enjoy a romantic bush dinner set beneath the starlit African night. Bush breakfast is the perfect surprise after an exciting morning game drive with astonishing view over the Mara plains.
Karen Blixen was passionate about cooking and our chefs have found many of her original recipes. Dining at the Camp captures the taste of these long gone colonial days with classical cooking from the French, English, Italian and Danish kitchens. Modern day’s love for cosmopolitan food with clear notes from the Far East, India or Kenya’s own traditional cooking is also served alongside the African continent’s finest wines.
Chui Lodge is situated just above the shores of Lake Naivasha within the Great Rift Valley –one of the true Natural Wonders of the World-, set in the privately owned 20.000 acre Oserian Wildlife Sanctuary overlooking a waterhole with the dramatic Mau Escarpment as a back drop. The Oserian Wildlife Sanctuary plays host to a diverse number of mammalian & avian species including White Rhino, Leopard, Buffalo, Giraffe, Cheetah, Grevy Zebra, Oryx and a large number of plains game.
Chui Lodge was built in 1998 by Hans and June Zwager and is now still owned and cared for by the family, who live at the stunning Djinn Palace nearby. History runs through this area from the days of the early settlers and from within the Moorish domes and castellations of the Palace came a family commited to supporting wildlife and conservation in the area.
There are eight individual well-spaced luxurious cottages, each with an en-suite bathroom and delightful verandah with views of the Sanctuary and the Rift escarpment stretching into the horizon. Magnificent four-poster olive wood king-sized beds, roaring log fires, artistically decorated windows and handcrafted furniture ensure the essential touch of luxury.
The dining room, lounge and bar area is simply unique and features pillars and murals with intricate African carvings, African antiques and ochre-coloured earth walls creating the feel of an artist’s gallery. Meals can be taken outside (weather permitting) within the grounds of the lodge and menus feature an array of international cuisine.
Often bush breakfasts and sundowners are a Sanctuary or lake shore affair since the day’s timetable for guests is completely flexible. A short walk from the main building is the delightful heated swimming pool with great views of a variety of wildlife visiting the waterhole and the Escarpment.
Chui Lodge boasts a wealth of activities. Professional local guides will tailor the daily activities to guest’s wishes and interests to include day & night game drives, guided bush walks, boat trips on the Lake filled with hippo’s, horse riding or a visit to the Oserian Flower Farm, one of the largest growers and producers of ‘cut flowers’ in the world! Here nearly every colour, hue, scent and size of rose is carefully and environmentally nurtured for export to international markets.
Kiangazi meaning ‘hot and dry season’ is a beautiful country house situated on a hill set amongst delightful lush gardens and rolling lawns with unsurpassed scenery of Lake Naivasha and the Great Rift Valley. Kiangazi House lies in the Wildlife corridor adjacent to the private 20,000 acre Oserian Wildlife Sanctuary complete with a fascinating diversity of wildlife including White Rhino, Leopard, Cheetah, Buffalo, Giraffe, Grevy Zebra, Oryx and many species of antelope.
Naivasha and the colonial homesteads around the lake were made famous in the decadent 1920’s by Lord Errol and his bohemian friends. The fabled Djinn Palace on the lake shore is a historical reminder of this era and is now the home of the Zwager family, owners of the Oserian Group of which Kiangazi House is a part. Breathtaking views from the verandah have changed little from those bygone days and with inviting waterholes below the main house it’s possible to view a procession of thirsty big game at close quarters.
Built in the old traditional style of local stone & timber, Kiangazi House has three double bedrooms within the main house and four additional double bedrooms just beyond the swimming pool, all en-suite. Luxurious features like fourposter beds, romantic turndowns and freshly cut roses, all enhance the personal touch. Within the house, private lounges, a bar and library all with fireplaces are the perfect places to curl up on a couch with a glass of exquisite wine.
The restaurant offers the highest standards of services and of course delicious international cuisine. Spectacular sundowners across the Rift escarpments can be organized and early morning bush breakfasts in the lakeside forests often give guests the chance to view the ubiquitous wildlife that abounds in this dramatic area.
With so much space and privacy, time here moves slowly and one can immerse oneself in the African bush without disturbance. However, you can also partake in a multitude of activities such as day & night game drives, guided bush walks along the lakeshore, tennis, horse riding, or boat trips on the hippo filled Lake. Alternatively and very close to the House it’s possible to visit the Oserian Flower farm, where roses and carnations to name but a few, are exported in their millions to international markets.
“Northern Kenya is a land of diverse habitats, few inhabitants but plentiful in wildlife. Here you’ll Loisaba Lodge and its celebrated Star Beds.
Rolling hills and short grassy plains dotted with bushes provide the ideal habitat for elephants, all three big cats species, the endangered African Hunting Dog and a host of elusive antelopes including Greater Kudu, Oryx, Grevy’s Zebra, Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe and Klipspringer to name a few.
With just seven rooms majestically perched on a high escarpment viewing the plans below, guests can dine in style, enjoy the spa, pool, tennis court or play boules. For the more adventurous there’s mountain biking, quad bikes, horseriding, camel trekking and river canoeing.
The Loisaba Conservancy includes an additional two 4-bedroomed private houses for guests each with their own pool and the unique Starbeds where literally one falls asleep in blissful comfort with just the stars as the roof above you. Samburu warriors will guide you on nature walks and longer treks if so requested.
Loisaba- a place to relax your body, mind and soul.”
